TLOA Supports Public Water Safety & Wayfinding Programs
Since 2007, TLOA has monitored the development of the Lake Tahoe Water Trail to protect private property rights through representation on the Lake Tahoe Non-Motorized Boating Working Group. In collaboration with regional land managers, public agencies and private stakeholders, TLOA helped to develop management and operational strategies to improve access to public beaches, safety, and stewardship practices.
Finding opportunities to improve public access and safety on public land remains a foremost goal for TLOA, and for use of SB630 funds (California pier and buoy rents.) While over 45% of the Tahoe shoreline is public ownership, only 30% is being utilized while lake recreation soars. TLOA wants to help lakewide land managers open the remaining public lands for public access, including designated launch/landing sites for non-motorized watercraft.
TLOA Funds Water Trail Educational Signage
One of the long-term objectives of the Working Group has been the development of educational signage to direct paddlers to publicly managed launch/landing sites with parking, restrooms, and other facilities. To kick-start the effort, in 2015 TLOA co-funded the design of the Water Trail Educational Wayfinding Interpretive Signage that is being installed at 20 designated public launch/landing “Trailhead” sites.

With the surge in paddleboard rescues and unfortunate cold water shock deaths, TLOA continues to provide financial support for the annual Lake Tahoe Water Trail water safety brochure. In addition to vital water safety and weather information, the brochure includes a map identifying the 20 designated public launch/landing trailhead sites around the lake. It also includes tips for paddlers to become more visible to other boaters such as wearing bright colors and carrying a whistle and flash light.
