Tahoe Science Advisory Council Role in Improving the Waters of Lake Tahoe

  • Robert Larsen, Program Officer, Tahoe Science Advisory Council

Bob Larsen serves as the Tahoe Science Advisory Council’s “Program Officer.” He is responsible for overseeing the administration and management of state funds invested in the Council, and for guiding the translation of science into action and policy.

  • Dr. Sudeep Chandra Council Co-Chair, Tahoe Science Advisory Council and Director UNR Global Water Center

Dr. Sudeep Chandra is the Director of the University of Nevada’s Global Water Center and the Castle Lake Environmental Research and Education Program. As an Associate Professor at the University, his research program focuses on the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems with a goal of improving environmental policy based on scientific information.

Scott Fennema, Ph.D.: Chief Hydrologist, U.S. District Court Water Master’s Office

  • Scott was born and raised in the Truckee River Basin. He studied hydrology at UNR and completed his doctorate at the University of Idaho, where he researched the impact of wildfires on forest soil phosphorus. Scott worked at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lahontan Basin Area Office, where he led flood operation modeling efforts for Lahontan Reservoir in 2017, 2018, and 2019. At Reclamation, Scott also focused on improving Truckee and Carson Rivers forecasts by integrating high-resolution snow volume estimates into the forecasting process. Scott is now the Chief Hydrologist at the US District Court Water Master’s Office for the Truckee and Carson Rivers. Scott’s primary interest is enhancing water management by integrating advanced hydrologic scientific knowledge into day-to-day processes.

Tim Bardsley, Senior Hydrologist for the National Weather Service

  • Tim Bardsley is the Senior Service Hydrologist for the Reno National Weather Service (NWS) office. In this capacity, Tim works closely with the California Nevada River Forecast Center, other NWS offices, and community partners to carry out the NWS mission as it relates to flooding, drought and water resources. Tim is active in many NWS teams, including the national Post-Wildfire Hydrology working group. Tim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder and a Master’s in Hydrology from the University of Nevada-Reno. He has spent his career specializing in hydrology and natural sciences in the Western United States. Prior to joining the NWS, Tim worked as the Utah Liaison and Research Integration Specialist for Western Water Assessment and as a hydrologist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Utah Snow Survey Office, as well as a research technician for the Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research Program. Tim enjoys spending his free time exploring mountains, canyons, rivers and lakes via a variety of human powered activities.

Dr. Geoffrey Schladow, Director of UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC)

  • Geoffrey Schladow holds B. Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Western Australia, and an M. Eng. in hydraulic engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. For over thirty years his research has focused on the interactions between the complex fluid motions found in nature and their impacts on water quality, ecosystem health and watershed processes. He has published over 170 research papers and technical reports and has guided over 70 graduate students. Dr. Schladow is an expert on both field data collection and numerical modeling, and frequently brings together teams of researchers to work on large, interdisciplinary projects. He holds the position of Professor of water resources and environmental engineering at UC Davis and is the founding director of the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

These include catch basin inserts to intercept and treat sediment, hydrocarbons, and chemicals in stormwater run-off; sewer manhole odor control products and UVC Treatment of Mosquito Eggs in vaults and manholes.
