Watchdog

Monitoring & Oversight Efforts:

  • Monitor legislation in Nevada & California.  Protect lakefront owners from Public Trust abuses.

    • TLOA was instrumental in lobbying the Nevada Legislature to repeal unreasonable lease fees for piers and buoys.
    • TLOA effected changes in California Leases from 5 to 10 year terms and successfully amended legislation to save lakefront owners thousands of dollars in annual rent fees.

  • Promote reasonable and fair regulation for lakefront properties.  Carefully review important cases at the state and federal level for impact to lakefront properties.

    • Participant in The Regional Plan Update process
    • Participant in the TRPA Shorezone Ordinances

  • Oversee the adoption, implementation, and interpretation of shorezone regulation

  • Participate in Stewardship programs for endangered species and environmental improvement

  • Dedicated to preserving the purity and clarity of the Lake, the health of our forests, the cleanliness of our air and the overall improvement of our environment

Advocacy Efforts:

TLOA successfully advocated for legislative amendments that benefit everyone in California with recreational structures. In fact, TLOA was the only group to suggest changes to the legislation repealing rent-free status for most owners. TLOA fought the repeal of rent-free status for over 30-years saving lakefront owners millions of dollars. TLOA advocated for fair and reasonable regulations during the TRPA shorezone ordinance amendment process providing over 90 pages of well-crafted comments and suggestions for a 20-year shorezone plan. TLOA advocated for strong aquatic invasive protections. TLOA has advocated for lakewide environmental policies for such things as fair boating inspection programs, protecting Nevada beaches from public access during the water trail discussions, and a comprehensive mooring program.

Protect, Preserve, and Preventative Efforts:

 

Protect: TLOA ensures that if necessary, private shoreline property rights will be defended.

Preserve: TLOA is committed to preserving the environment. TLOA is a signatory to the Tahoe Yellow Cress (TYC) Conservation Strategy Agreement for the next 10 years that promotes TYC stewardship. This Agreement features protection of this unique little plant along with a strong stewardship component. TLOA believes in appropriate goose management in Lake Tahoe.

Prevent: TLOA supports the prevention and control of harmful aquatic invasive species (AIS) from entering Lake Tahoe. TLOA board members helped to fund and launch the very first AIS Boat inspections at Lake Tahoe.

TLOA is a partner in the AIS Prevention Challenge, a Collaborative Agreement with the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and Tahoe Fund which has launched an Implementation Plan made up of strategies for the removal and control of AIS in Lake Tahoe over the next 3 to 5 years. The plan consists of three categories of invasive species and control actions for each with the goal of reducing the overall expansion of AIS. This is an important private-public initiative.
